The Olympic games

are divided into he winter part and the summer part, which alternate once every two years. There are also Paralympic Games where people with physical disabilities can compete. One of the most important things was founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC drafted policy and selected as the site of the first Olympic games. In theory, athletes of all nations are eligible to participate. The IOC maintains headquarters in Lausanne (Switzerland) and currently recognizes 186 national Olympic committees. The site of the games is chosen, usually 6 years in advance, by IOC.
