The British

have always been a nation of sport lovers; when the Englishman opens his newspaper the first thing he does is to turn to the sports' page. Many sports which nowadays are played all over the world originated in England. Football is perhaps the best example, others are horse-racing, golf, lawn tennis and rowing.
Large crowds attend occasions such as the association football Cup Final match at Wembley Stadium, the international rugby matches at Twickenham and Cardiff, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the classic horse races, Grand Prix motor racing and the cricket Test Matches; millions also watch them on television. The British have a reputation for being very keen on sports. They do, in fact, enjoy watching sports rather than playing them. The most popular spectator sports are football and cricket. Many people take part in active recreation such as climbing, rambling, riding, boating, angling and other waterbased sports, keep-fit classes, movement and dance activities. Indoor sports like darts1, billiards and badminton also enjoy popularity.
