The Olympic games
The OG are held every four years. According to fables Greek hero Herakles was founder. The first OG were held in 776 BC in Greek. Games we abolished in 393 AD. They competed in running, fighting, pentathlon, horse racing, music and poetry.
Founder the modern OG is Pierre de Coubertin. His motto: The not important win but to take part. The first modern OG were held in 1896 in Athens. Only five sport disciplines were on the programme in 1896 – gymnastic, athletic, fencing, swimming and rowing. Competitors came from 13 countries. Now are on the programme almost 30 disciplines and the competitors come from more them 120 countries. The next summer will take place in Athens 2004. The first gold medal for Czechoslovakia won Mr. Šupčík in climbing in 1924 in Paris. Our most successful Olympic competitors are Emil Zátopek and Věra Čáslavká.
